“Abortion care is health care, and health is a human right.” - World Health Organisation
Today, 28 September, is safe abortion day. Sadly, many women, girls and pregnant people around the world do not have access to safe abortion and so cannot exercise their basic right to decide if and when to have a child. Abortion is an essential part of sexual and reproductive health care and reproductive rights.
Women around the world still die from unsafe abortion, which is a tragedy considering that abortion can be delivered effectively in primary care and telehealth.
Here in Aotearoa, we are fortunate to have new laws that enable access to safe abortion services locally and through the national telehealth service, DECIDE. However, there is still inequity in New Zealand with inconsistent access to local services across regions, and no funding mechanism for primary care providers to offer abortion services.
Family Planning has been a courageous advocate for abortion access and will continue to advocate for abortion to be fully integrated into health care so people can have safe, equitable and timely access that meets their needs and supports reproductive rights.
Family Planning has clinics located throughout New Zealand. Use the clinic finder to find your nearest clinic.
