Making Whanganui more diversity friendly

Tuesday, April 21, 2015

National News

Making Whanganui a more diversity-friendly community is the goal of Shift Whanganui – a regional hui being hosted by Family Planning and InsideOut.

Shift Whanganui will run from 16-17 May to coincide with the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia  (IDAHOT) which is celebrated globally on May 17.

The hui, which is open to people of all sexualities and genders, will be held at the Whanganui Tuhopo Complex (Rangahaua Marae).

It is a great opportunity to understand and support the challenges and aspirations of young people with diverse sexual orientation and gender.

The event will run in three parts:

  •  A one-day professional development workshop for health professionals and educators
  • A two hour ‘parent session’ workshop for parents, whānau and caregivers of sexually diverse young people
  • A two-day workshop hosted by youth for youth aged 13 -24 years

Our health promotion team will be running the professional development day, delivering our popular Affirming Diversity workshop which guides health professionals and educators on teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity.

InsideOUT, the principal hosts of Shift Whanganui work nationally to support, educate and engage young people, their whānau, schools, and communities to create safer environments for young people questioning and identifying as LGBTI.

For more information contact our Health Promotion team or to register, visit the InsideOUT website
